CAC pitcher Olsen, coach Gilich receive ACCAC top honors
SIGNAL PEAK — Central Arizona College pitcher Mat Olsen and baseball coach Anthony Gilich received major awards from the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and the NJCAA's Region I for their performances this season.
Olsen, the ace of the CAC pitching staff, was named the ACCAC/Region I Pitcher of the Year, and Gilich took home Coach of the Year honors when the awards were announced Tuesday.
A former star at Florence High School, Olsen is 9-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings. He has allowed just 32 hits and 20 walks. His ERA is tied for fifth in the nation, and he's tied for ninth in the NJCAA in strikeouts.
Gilich, who coached the Vaqueros to the national championship in 2019, led CAC to wins in its first 31 games of the season before finally suffering a defeat to Phoenix on April 3.
The Vaqueros are 43-5 overall, including 33-5 in the ACCAC. They are ranked No. 3 in the country in the latest NJCAA Division I poll heading into the Region I tournament this weekend.
